Easy Trip from Zermatt to Lugano -
Spectacular Views from the Swiss Alps to the Lake Lugano
Glacier Express is Switzerland’s most famous mountain railway, connecting two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. It travels between west and east, passing over hundreds of bridges and through dozens of tunnels, offering panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and surrounding valleys, forests, Alpine meadows, rushing streams, and picturesque villages.
Zermatt is a true mountain village filled with Swiss
chalets. From there, the Gornergrat
railway (below) links the town with the summit of Gornergrat. The Gornergrat railway
station is situated at 10,135 ft, making the Gornergrat railway the second
highest railway in Europe, after the Jungfrau. Jungfrau can be explored from
the town of Interlaken (previous post). Gornergrat summit offers views of the
legendary Matterhorn, of course on a clear day.
St. Moritz is one of the most expensive ski resorts
in the world. It does not represent the spirit of the surrounding mountains as
Zermatt does. But it offers fairly quick access to four surrounding mountains.
Piz Nair can be reached right from the village. The next closest mountain is
Muottas Muragl, which offers spectacular views of the lakes; followed by
Diavolezza and Morteratsch Glacier.
Bernina
Express (above) connects St. Moritz with Tirano in Italy. It
travels between north and south, offering the most spectacular views. One of
the highlights is the panoramic journey through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape
of the Albula and Bernina Passes. Another highlight of the journey is the Brusio
Circular Viaduct (below).
Bernina
Express Bus (only during the summer) connects Tirano with Lugano at Lake Lugano,
traveling through the Italian landscape of Valtellina famous for its wines. The
shores of Lake Como offer the views of charming little villages.
