Bern, capital of Switzerland, is known for its Old
City and its ‘exceptionally coherent planning concept’ – 4 miles of arcades,
Zytglogge – clock tower, and unique onion festival. However, the landmark of
the city is the clock tower, built in the 13th century.
The Old City, UNESCO World Heritage Site, is looped
by the Aare River. Its medieval center has remained essentially unchanged since
its construction during the 12th to the 15th century. It
is home to Switzerland’s tallest cathedral, 15th century Gothic
cathedral - Munster. The 4 mile of arcades is one of the longest covered
shopping promenades in Europe.
Legend of the founding of the city says that Duke
Berchtold V in 1191 vowed to name the city after the first animal he met on his
hunt, which happened to be a bear.
The ‘Zibelemarit’ meaning Onion Market is a
traditional folk festival held on the fourth Monday of every November. More info at: http://www.bern.com/en/city-of-bern/events-bern/top-events/onion-market
