Lucerne, located on the shores of Lake Lucerne and
within sight of Mt. Pilatus and Rigi, is known as the prettiest city in
Switzerland. It is said, if you haven’t visited Lucerne, then you haven’t been
to Switzerland. The city is famous for two landmarks, the Chapel Bridge and the
Lion Monument.
The Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden footbridge
crossing the Reuss River. It was erected in the 14th century. Its
interior paintings date back to the 17th century, although many of
them along with the old bridge were destroyed in a 1993 fire.
The Lion Monument, a rock sculpture, commemorates
the Swiss Guards, who were massacred in the Tuileries Palace, Paris, in 1792
during the French Revolution.
In close proximity to the Chapel Bridge, there are two more bridges (below).
