Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

Weekend Getaway

Pine Creek Gorge located at the heart of Pennsylvania is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. The gorge stretches for 47 miles, beginning south of Ansonia, near Wellsboro, along U.S. Route 6 and continues south. At the Leonard Harrison (east rim) and Colton Point (west rim) State Parks, the depth is more than 800 feet. These overlooks offer the most spectacular views.

The Turkey Path at Leonard Harrison State Park winds past waterfalls and areas of beautiful scenery. The trail steeply descends one mile to the canyon floor.

Colton Point State Park offers 4 miles of hiking trails, including the Turkey Path Trail. This very narrow trail steeply descends to the floor of the canyon. More info at http://visittiogapa.com/canyon.html

Wellsboro is a tiny town with a lot of charm. Pianos decorate the Main Street adding charm like nowhere else. There is lodging and restaurants along the Main Street. The Steak House offers excellent food, the one you wouldn’t expect in such small town.

Continuing east on U.S. Route 6 from Wellsboro, the road winds through peaceful scenery and charming towns displaying Victorian houses (Troy, Towanda). The lookout point at Marie Antoinette near Wyalusing is worth stopping. It offers scenery of the Pennsylvania farmlands along Susquehanna River.

Pocono Garlic Festival occurs on the Labor Day Weekend. Located in the beautiful hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area. More info at http://www.poconogarlic.com/
